How We Use Ultrasound for Precise Needle Injections

I’m Dr. Grant Pagdin. I’m just answering a few questions about platelet-rich plasma. I wanted to tell you a little about the ultrasound we use. People have asked if we have to use ultrasound for every single injection and it is extremely helpful for some of our injections, there’s no question. We use an instrument called a Fuji Sonosite, which has needle enhancement technology, meaning we can actually visualize the needle going into an area that we want to inject. That’s particularly helpful for joints like the hip, ankle, shoulder and soft tissues like rotator cuff.

Now some joints, I simply just use surface landmarks and I can inject a knee, for instance, just using an anatomical approach. So it wouldn’t be true to say that absolutely every single injection must be ultrasound guided, but there’s no question that it is a beautiful technology that I just couldn’t live without.
