I recently had a question from one of my hormone replacements clients who was asking if progesterone can be associated with any type of cancer.
A number of years ago, back around 2000 there was a big study called the Women’s Health Study, and they looked at women that were on traditional forms of hormone replacement back in those days, which included Premarin, the type of estrogen generated from pregnant horse urine and a synthetic progesterone called Provera (the other name for that is progesterone acetate). Provera was a synthetic kind of a progesterone that doesn’t occur anywhere in nature. And yes, that particular kind of progesterone was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, so we no longer use that kind of progesterone.
What we use nowadays is a bio-identical form of progesterone, so it’s identical to what’s in your own body. This particular kind of progesterone, micronized progesterone, is not associated with any increased cancer risk.
The good news there is you could safely take the bio identical form of progesterone.
