What are the results of using platelet-rich plasma to treat sports injuries?

We’re talking about the results of platelet-rich plasma treatments for sports injuries and people are always interested to know “how soon am I going to see a benefit, and how soon could I resume my sporting activities?” Well, platelets contain a whole variety of growth factors that have already been manufactured and when we inject those into the area of injury, these growth factors go to work within the first hour. The platelets can survive in the area that we’ve injected them for up to a week and they can continue to manufacture additional growth factors so the healing process takes place very quickly over the first one to two weeks. Oftentimes I have athletes return to sports in that timeframe at about the two week mark.

I’ll give you an example, I had a high level masters soccer player, a women age 39, and she came to see me with a very sore and swollen Achilles tendon that had been keeping her on the sidelines for the better part of a year. We injected her Achilles tendon with platelet-rich plasma, and within two weeks she was back playing a full match and she was pain free. She was very delighted with the treatment. This is the kind of story that we hear quite often with platelet-rich plasma for sports injuries.
